Dog Pregnancy Calculator
About 63 days, as a due-date window.
Starting estimate from published formulas. Your vet knows your pet.
How to use the dog pregnancy calculator
- Leave the date blank to see day numbers only. The printed page never stores today's calendar date.
- The page opens on mating. Switch to ovulation if a vet timed it. The window gets narrower.
- Read the due window first. Day Day 63 is the average inside it.
- Type YYYY-MM-DD, or use the calendar button, when you want those day numbers turned into dates and a calendar file.
How long are dogs pregnant?
About 63 days. That is the average Cornell states from ovulation, and it is also the centre of the wider breeding-date window.
If the ovulation date is known, Cornell expects the birth 63 +/- 1–2 days later. This tool uses the wider side, so the ovulation window is Day 61 to Day 65, with Day 63 in the middle.
If you only have a mating date, the same Cornell page says breeding dates are often inaccurate: 63 +/- 7 days from the first breeding. That is Day 56 to Day 70. The page opens on mating, so the headline is 56–70 days.
Sperm can live for days, the egg still has to mature after ovulation, and a female may accept mating for several days on either side. That is why a breeding date is a window and an ovulation date is a tighter one. Ovulation timing is the better input when you have it.
A second published span, not averaged in
Merck's whelping chapter states a different breeding-date span: Day 58 to Day 72 from the first time the female permitted breeding. It does not offer a single average in that sentence.
The headline follows Cornell, because that is the page that also states the ovulation rule. The Merck span stays on the list so the disagreement is visible. The two ranges are not blended into a new pair of numbers.
The list under the result is day offsets plus the labor signs Cornell describes: a temperature that can fall below 99 °F, stage I nesting, and a gap of up to 2 hours between puppies. It is not a week-by-week chart of organ development. Weekly fetal landmarks are not part of that whelping page, so they are not added here.
Confirm with a vet, and when to call
Cornell says to involve a veterinarian early and regularly if the dog is pregnant, and to seek care immediately if birth is difficult or you are unsure it is normal. Ultrasound part-way through can be used to estimate the due time. A progesterone drop near the end is another clinic tool. This page does not replace either.
Have the pregnancy confirmed. Do not treat Day 63 as a promise of the morning labor will start.
Call a vet if more than 2 hours pass between puppies, if green discharge is not followed at once by a puppy, if stage I seems to run far past the lengths in the list, or if you simply do not know whether things are normal. Lochia after birth can last about 3 weeks and sometimes up to 8 weeks. A foul smell is a reason to call, not a detail to watch at home.
Day offsets, two sources
| Date you have | Earliest | Average | Latest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ovulation, Cornell | Day 61 | Day 63 | Day 65 |
| First breeding, Cornell | Day 56 | Day 63 | Day 70 |
| First permitted breeding, Merck | Day 58 | — | Day 72 |
Day offsets only. Cornell's breeding window is 63 ± 7 days. Merck's chapter states 58–72 days and no average in that sentence, so the middle cell is blank.
Tips and common mistakes
- A single mating day is not automatically the first breeding day Cornell counts from. If there were several matings, use the first one and keep the wide window.
- Switching to ovulation changes the headline. It does not invent a more precise date than +/- 2 days.
- The calendar file is an all-day reminder of the window edges. It is not a booking at a clinic.
When to call your vet
- You want the pregnancy confirmed, or a litter count, or help timing ovulation. Those are exams.
- More than 2 hours pass between puppies, or green discharge appears without a puppy right after it.
- You are unsure labor has started, or stage I has gone on and on.
- Discharge after birth smells foul, or the dog seems ill. Do not wait out the lochia sentence on your own.
Frequently asked questions
How long are dogs pregnant?
About 63 days. From ovulation the Cornell window on this page is Day 61 to Day 65. From the first breeding date it is Day 56 to Day 70. The page opens on the breeding window, 56–70 days.
Can the due date be early or late?
Yes. That is why the result is a window. Ovulation is the tighter one (Day 61 to Day 65). A breeding date is wider (Day 56 to Day 70). Merck's chapter states yet another breeding span, Day 58 to Day 72, which this tool does not mix into the headline.
When can a vet confirm pregnancy?
Cornell points to the clinic for early and regular checks, including ultrasound part-way through and hormone tests near the end. This page does not turn those visits into a day number. Book them with the practice that knows the dog.
Why does the page show day 63 instead of a calendar date?
A calendar date baked into the page would be wrong next week. Day offsets stay true. Enter the mating or ovulation date and the same rows gain real days, plus a calendar file you import yourself.
Is a temperature under 99 °F a guarantee that puppies are coming?
No. Cornell says a drop below 99 °F within a day of whelping is often seen and is not always detected. Normal temperature is given as 100 °F to 102.5 °F. It is one sign among others, not a switch you should manage alone.
